Official start & finishes?

We went to the Ma
cquarie Obelisk (great stuff on these in the book by the way -- many thanks -- never knew there was so MUCH to know about them). Anyhow -- there are no sign for the Great North Walk (that we could find around there -- we weren't' keen to go on as we were worried about no more signs if we took the ferry. Where do the OFFICIAL signs actually start? Does anyone know?
AND
we notice that the record trip on the GNW started at the Newcastle Obelisk -- surely this isnt' the REAL start/end point? Is it?
